Chapter

Sixteen

At dawn, the bulldozer came barreling down the lane along with Detective Richards driving a safe distance behind. The previous night’s late-May rain had dampened the earth near J.B. Towry’s grave and made it as soft as butter for the machine to cut through.

Terran gripped my hand as we stood near the gate. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

I turned and pressed a hand to his chest. “When you asked me to marry you, I’m sure you never thought this would be part of the plan.”

His lips brushed against mine. “I wouldn’t have asked you to marry me if I didn’t know exactly what I was signing up for.”

“Then trust me,” I said.

He sighed and kissed me again as the man driving the backhoe stepped down from where he sat. “Which grave are we digging up?” he asked.

I separated from Terran and made my way into the cemetery, to the corner where J.B. Towry’s crooked headstone was barely visible beneath the overgrown limbs of the willow tree beside it. “Let’s cut these limbs back,” I said to Terran who came with heavy clippers and cut them one by one until finally I could see the entirety of his tombstone.
